PeriodontologyPeriodontology

Periodontology is a broad branch of dental medicine that deals with the treatment of gum diseases and other periodontal tissues. These include periodontal disease - periodontitis.

Periodontitis is the most common cause of tooth loss after the age of 35. The dentist, with the help of an oral hygienist, determines the stage of the disease and prescribes therapy accordingly.

What is periodontitis and why does it occur? What is periodontitis and why does it occur?

Periodontitis (periodontal disease) is a chronic inflammation of the tissues that surround and support the teeth – the gums, bones, and ligaments that hold the tooth in the jaw. It is a progressive disease that, without timely treatment, can lead to tooth mobility and loss.

The main cause of periodontitis is bacterial plaque, which accumulates on the teeth and along the gum line. If plaque is not removed regularly and thoroughly, it hardens into tartar, which allows for even more intensive bacterial reproduction.

These bacteria trigger the body's inflammatory response:

• first, gum inflammation (gingivitis) occurs
• then the inflammation spreads deeper into the periodontal tissues
• gradually, the bone supporting the tooth begins to deteriorate

Because the disease often progresses slowly and without pain, many people only notice it when their teeth start to loosen.

Precise diagnostics

First, we perform a clinical examination, measure the depth of periodontal pockets (probing), assess gum bleeding, and, if necessary, take an X-ray to evaluate bone loss.

ADVICE

Regular check-ups and professional cleanings (every 3–6 months) are crucial, as only through maintenance can we prevent the disease or its recurrence.
