No matter how careful the work is, complications cannot always be avoided. Minor injuries to the mucosa or bone heal without consequences; bleeding can be stopped with cold compresses and firm pressure on the wound with gauze or a tampon. Before the procedure, please inform us about any medications affecting blood clotting or certain medications for osteoporosis, as we will adjust the treatment process accordingly.
In the lower jaw, a rare but possible nerve injury can occur, causing a temporary, or more rarely permanent, decrease in sensation in the lower lip.
In the upper jaw, due to the position of the roots, a temporary opening of the maxillary sinus can sometimes occur. In this case, it is important to follow our post-operative instructions. Healing is mostly spontaneous, but sometimes surgical treatment is required.

Inflammatory complications after tooth extraction are relatively common and can occur after the removal of any tooth. The probability of such complications is higher with the extraction of lower teeth. In most cases, it is a superficial inflammation of the bone - so-called alveolar osteitis; other complications are rarer.
Symptoms appear 3-4 days after tooth extraction:
• severe pain radiating towards the ear, eye, or neck,
• strong bad breath,
• unpleasant taste
Superficial bone inflammation occurs due to the breakdown of the blood clot that fills the extraction wound after the tooth is removed. Why this happens is not entirely clear, but known risk factors that increase the likelihood of complications include:
• smoking
• taking oral contraceptives
• failure to follow post-extraction instructions
• superficial bone inflammation during a previous tooth extraction
• gum inflammation
There is no known effective treatment; we alleviate pain with wound cleaning and painkillers, and the condition finally subsides within a maximum of two weeks.
Complications after tooth extraction can be effectively avoided with fibrin (L-PRF) plugs, achieving faster and better healing. Before the procedure, a small amount of blood is taken from the arm and processed in a special centrifuge. Fibrin plugs are formed from the blood, inserted into the extraction wound, and sutured. The plugs are rich in fibrin, leukocytes, platelets, and growth factors, which are released from the plug in the days following extraction, ensuring faster and more efficient healing. The possibility of post-extraction complications is negligible, and tissue regeneration is better and faster. The volume of bone regenerated when using a fibrin plug is significantly larger than if no plug is used. Lack of bone is often a limiting factor for dental implant placement, which can be avoided by using fibrin plugs during tooth extraction.

Swelling, bleeding, or wound inflammation are possible, but complications are rare and quickly resolvable with timely treatment. The most common complication is alveolitis sicca (dry socket), which occurs in about 5% of cases. Unfortunately, there is no effective cure for it; the condition is managed with higher doses of analgesics and wound cleaning.
